Homelessness survey paints bleak picture of needy in Waterloo Region

Of 281 homeless people surveyed in Waterloo Region this week, 45 per cent are considered at high risk of dying on the street.

Half the people surveyed said they have nothing to look forward to each day beyond surviving.

Five have been homeless for more than 20 years.

This is just a glimpse of the picture of need in the Region of Waterloo.

At regional headquarters Wednesday, officials presented initial findings of the survey completed Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. It’s part of a national movement called the 20,000 Homes Campaign which seeks to house the most vulnerable homeless people by 2020.
